Why everyone needs waterproof flooring

It doesn't matter where you live because we all experience appliance floods and leaky pipes on occasion, not to mention dropped gallons of milk or juice, overturned cups and glasses (full, of course!), and tracked in snow and ice from those cold Iowa winters. Waterproof flooring gives you peace of mind, knowing that nothing is a big problem anymore. It’s relatively new, but consumers and retailers alike are taking notice.

What does this mean? Is it the same as water-resistant?

You need to know what you are getting, and these two terms are often and incorrectly used interchangeably. When something is entirely impervious to liquid, it's made of waterproof materials, with no special coatings to help enhance the capability. While a product can have high water resistance, it must be wiped immediately or soak through to the core and stain.

Two newcomers to the market

Relatively new, waterproof vinyl flooring already has consumers and retailers taking note. This is engineered luxury vinyl, resulting in a thicker, more durable floor. This also comes with technologically advanced cores, either the WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite), two that won’t ever peel or ripple, no matter how much water there is or for how long. Since it is a version of luxury vinyl, it has all the styles of that product! It has realistic images of wood, stone, or tile, taken with 3D photography, so the images are clear, vibrant, and accurate. Micro beveling and embossing add depth, dimension, and textured looks such as wire-brushed hand-scraped, weathered and distressed. It is available in matte, gloss, and high gloss colors. It's also easy to maintain with just a regular (daily, if possible) sweeping and periodic mopping with a manufacturer-approved cleaner. Avoid waxy, shine-promoting cleaners as they can damage the finish and dull the floor. Installation is also easy, especially when it's a floating floor that clicks, mats, and hovers. Another newcomer, waterproof laminate flooring, is spill-proof and eliminates concerns about soaking and staining. This features a non-wood construction, so now it can be installed in kitchens, baths, and other wet places where it was once avoided due to moisture issues. Mainly associated with hardwood, with increasing popularity in stone looks, this has a firm, rigid feeling of a hard surface. It, too, can be installed as a floating floor.
